The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is now accepting applications for this year’s Helen Barrett Bright Idea Awards, in memory of entrepreneur Helen Barrett, who had cystic fibrosis. Helen dreamed of setting up her own gym and didn’t let cystic fibrosis hold her back. Sadly, she died a week before her 32nd birthday, but her gym is still thriving today. These awards are set up in her memory, to help other people with cystic fibrosis follow in her footsteps.
If you have cystic fibrosis and have a business idea or hobby that you want to develop into a career, you could win expert mentoring and £1,000 to help you on your way. The money can be used for equipment, training, resources, marketing – whatever you think you need to make your ambitions become a reality.
Becky Kilgariff, Support Services Manager at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said: “When we ran the awards last year, we were blown away by the creativity, talent and entrepreneurship of all those who applied. Working for yourself can be incredibly rewarding, and means you can be your own boss, set your own hours and do what you love.
"We’d encourage anyone with a hobby, talent or idea that could, with a bit of investment and support, become a future business to apply for the Helen Barrett Bright Ideas Awards. We want people with cystic fibrosis to use the grants and mentoring to follow in Helen’s footsteps and live the life they want to.”
How to enter
The deadline for entries is 31 January 2017 and the awards will be made in March 2017. To enter, you'll need to read the instructions, fill in a form and submit supporting documents as well as a two-minute video pitch (if possible/relevant).
Milly, who won an award last year, said: "Since receiving the money from the Helen Barrett Bright Ideas Award I have been able to set up my sewing business with a workstation, more fabric and everything I need for my stall when I'm showing at craft fairs. Without this head-start I would never have been able to grow my business so well and so quickly.
"I am just so grateful that Helen's memory has given me the opportunity to do what I love the most and enabled me to keep my sanity after losing my job because my health got so bad. Thank you so much! You motivate me every day!"
